이 영어 원서는 이상한 나라의 앨리스와 거울 나라의 앨리스가 모두 들었고 존 테니얼의 흑백 삽화도 모두 들었다. 그러면서 가격은 원서 중에 가장 싸다. 3달러 95센트. 크기는 포켓판이다. 어른 한 손 크기다. 겉표지는 코팅되어 있다. 만지면 느낌도 좋다.

왜 이 작품을 영어 원서로 읽어야 하는지는 명백하다. 동음이의어 말장난을 알기 위해서다. 번역은 뜻을 옮길 순 있어도 해당 말의 음운은 옮길 수 없다. 따라서 음운으로 말장난을 하면 번역서에서는 이를 주석으로 설명해 주는 것이 고작이다.

또한 루이스 캐럴은 이 작품에서 패러디를 많이 하는데, 이를 제대로 알기 위해서는 원문으로 읽어야 한다.

작품 발표 당시 1865년, 영국 아이들에게 외우게 했던 시 How doth the Little Bee를 패러디한 것이다. 벌(Bee)를 악어(crocodile)로 바꾼다. 벌의 부지런함을 본받으라는 교훈시를 악어 우스개로 만들었다.

해당 사이트에 가면 볼거리가 많은데, 그중에서 추천하는 것은 '이상한 나라의 앨리스' 작가 초본이다. 보면 작가가 직접 그린 그림도 있다. 그림은 존 테니얼에 비하면 실망스러운 수준이나 아마추어 스케치로는 훌륭한 편이다. 참, 보이는 것처럼 작가가 처음으로 붙인 제목은 Alice's Adventures Under Ground였다.

하나 더 추천할 볼거리는, 작가와 앨리스의 모델이 된 사람의 사진이다. 루이스 캐롤은 필명이다. 본명은 찰스 루트위지 도즈슨(Charles Lutwidge Dodgson)이다. 수학자였다. 주인공의 실제 앨리스 리델(Alice Liddell)이다.

사진 보니까 앨리스는 커서는 못생겼네. 주인공과 창작 관련해서 작가가 아동성애자일 거라는 말이 떠도는데, 결정적으로 확인된 증거는 없다. 아이들을 좋아하고 소녀 사진을 많이 찍었으니, 의심은 가나 증거는 없다. 워낙 그렇게들 추측하니까 가짜 합성 사진까지 나돌고 있다.
